Those Christmas Garlands Are Hanging From Something. This Is the Season to Check It.

Every year the garlands, baubles and hanging displays go up across your centre, and for six weeks or more they sit above thousands of people doing their Christmas shopping. Something overhead is holding all of it in place.

Those fixing points carry real weight. A single garland run, a large suspended star, a cluster of banners: the loads add up quickly, and they hang there day and night through the busiest trading period of the year. In most cases they are sound. Sometimes they are not, and we have seen hooks pulling away from plaster ceilings and posts, or fabric slings wrapped around poles beneath skylights, left in place for years and weakened by UV. Every season a little more load goes onto fixings whose history and rated capacity are not always written down anywhere.

That is the part that sits with you. You are managing the fit-out, the contractors, the trading hours and the tenants all at once, and the small steel hook in the ceiling is easy to lose in the middle of that. It is not that the fixing points do not matter to you. When we find a point that will not hold, the fix is often simple. In the harder cases, where a feature piece hangs above the escalators and the voids between levels, or behind ceiling and decorative structure, the safer call is to relocate or remove it rather than trust it for another season.

Then we document it properly. You receive photos of every inspected and load tested hook, along with a layout showing exactly where each one sits across the centre. That register tells you and your decoration contractor what is installed, where it is, what it is approved to carry and when it was last tested. Your riggers arrive knowing which points are good to use and which are not, instead of finding out the hard way. We recommend this inspection and load test annually, before each season’s decorations go up, so the fixings are proven fresh every year.
