Most of what defines a business happens when no one is watching. It is the small decisions made every day that add up to who you actually are.
A lot of businesses talk about commitment to safety, environment, and quality. We have built ours into how we operate, not because someone asked us to, but because it is the right thing to do.
Our promise has always been to provide safety solutions that address real-world challenges, protect workers, and support operational success. We believe that promise has to extend beyond the job site. It applies to the roof, the paperwork, and the skip bin.
Safety, environment, and quality are not competing priorities for us. They sit alongside each other in everything we do.
How We Got Here.
We did not arrive at our environmental commitment overnight. We started where it made sense to start.
Aluminium
Aluminium was the first and easiest change. Every trade business generates aluminium offcuts, and offcuts have real value in the recycling stream. It cost us nothing to separate it. Low hanging fruit, and a good reminder that starting somewhere beats waiting for a perfect plan.
The pallets
The pallets came next. In 2021 we started returning our used pallets to our supplier Kattsafe rather than sending them to landfill. What we did not expect was that Kattsafe had no process in place to receive them. No one had ever asked before. So we worked it out together. That single conversation shifted how we think about waste across the whole business.
The thinking changed
Once we had solved the pallet problem, the thinking changed. If we could figure that out, we could figure out the rest.
Where We Are Now
Today we recycle or return for reuse: aluminium, steel, pallets, soft plastics, batteries, and printer cartridges. Used drink containers collected through our business go to support a local Scout group through the container deposit scheme.
Soft plastics deserve a mention of their own. Most of our deliveries arrive wrapped in pallet wrap, and after the pallets themselves, soft plastics are our single largest volume of generated waste. Commercial quantities cannot be dropped at a municipal facility, so we set up a dedicated stream to handle them properly. The result is a total landfill contribution of less than a household bin per fortnight across the entire business. For a trade services company, we are proud of that.
None of these changes were as hard as they looked. Each one just took a decision to start.
Our Challenge to the Industry
We believe every trade business our size can get here. Pick one material stream. Return the pallets. Set up the soft plastics collection. Start somewhere. The cumulative effect of small, consistent decisions made by enough businesses adds up to something that genuinely matters.
