Your Rooftop Needs a Map Reference

For those who grew up in Melbourne before the rise of mobile digital technology, Melways map coordinates could get you anywhere.You would haul the Melways off the back seat, flip through those worn pages until you hit the right one, then run your finger down and across the grid squares. There it was. Your destination, the Melways got you there every time.

A grid reference did something simple. It gave you context. You knew where you were, what sat around you, and how to reach the thing you were looking for. Flip, find, go.

Most building owners do not have a good map of the features and equipment on their own rooftop. You know there are anchor points up there somewhere. Maybe a static line, a ladder, a hatch. But ask where each one sits, what it is rated for, when it was last inspected, and how to get to it, that information isn’t easy to find.

This is the problem. The equipment exists, but the picture does not. Nobody can point to it.

The internal problem is the one that keeps you up. You are accountable for that roof. When a contractor turns up to service the air conditioning or clear the gutters, they spend time searching, trying to find a safe point to clip onto. You field the phone call asking for information. You carry the risk, and you don’t have the visibility of what you are responsible for.

There is a bigger principle underneath all of it. Every worker who steps onto that roof deserves to know exactly where safe is before they take a step. Every owner deserves to see their building clearly, not guess at it.

We capture the latitude and longitude of every height safety asset and reference it to GDA2020, the current national datum your phone and the satellites it uses already. Each anchor point, static line, ladder and hatch gets its own set of coordinates. Type them into Google Maps, Apple Maps or a Garmin, on your phone or at your desktop, and they will take you straight to that point. No flipping pages. We record each position to sub-metre accuracy, finer in most cases than the phone or GPS unit trying to guide you to it.

Sit that map next to the data and the whole picture opens up. Our records tell your trades exactly what is installed, what use each item is approved for, and when it was last inspected. The map adds what paperwork alone never could. It tells them where. A contractor can look before they leave the depot, plan their route, and walk straight to the ladder or ladder bracket without having to search for it. An inspection stops being a page of ticks and becomes a living picture of your roof.

Australian Standards call for height safety systems to be inspected and recertified by a competent person at least every 12 months under AS/NZS 1891.4. When every asset is mapped, nothing gets missed and nothing gets counted twice.

To be clear about our role, we make the roof safe so your trades can do their work. We install and certify the height safety equipment your contractor needs. We do not carry out the rooftop maintenance itself. What we hand you is safe access, clear inspection records, and a map that puts every bit of it in context.

Picture the version where this is done well. A contractor books a job, opens your roof map before they leave, and knows exactly where the certified anchors are. They check the certification of the anchors is current before leaving their office, arrive, clip on with confidence, complete the work and go home to their family.

Now picture the version without it. A worker climbs onto an unfamiliar roof with no map and no records. They clip onto the wrong fixture, or one that has not been certified in years, because nobody could tell them any better. Or they cannot find safe access at all, the maintenance gets skipped, and a small problem becomes an expensive one. When something goes wrong up there, the questions come fast. WorkSafe investigations, insurance disputes and, in the worst case, someone who does not come home.

The Melways never made the trip for you. It just meant you never got lost. Your rooftop deserves that same clarity, captured right down to less than a meter.
