Are You Choosing a Height Safety Provider for the Right Reasons, or Just Ticking a Box?

Height safety used to be the last thing anyone thought about. It came up when a contractor handed you a SWMS, or when someone flicked through a JSA before climbing onto your roof. The rest of the time it sat in a drawer.

That world has changed. Every asset on your roof, the air conditioning, the solar, the exhaust fans, the antennas, needs to be maintained, and it needs to be maintained safely. Height safety is no longer a topic you check at the last minute. It is part of the workflow that keeps the whole building running.

The trouble is that most providers still treat it like paperwork. You get a certificate, a folder of photos, and a spreadsheet that lives on someone’s laptop. When you need to plan next year’s maintenance, or prove to an auditor what is actually installed and where, that information is scattered, out of date, or missing. You are the one left holding the responsibility, and you cannot manage what you cannot see.

That uncertainty is the real weight you carry. You are accountable for everyone who steps onto that roof, and for keeping the building compliant, yet the data you rely on to do it is only as good as the provider who collected it. If they treated the job as a box to tick, you inherit the gaps. And every person who works on your roof, and every tenant who depends on that building, deserves better than a gap.

And are your own processes independently audited?

That last question matters more than most people realise. Standards like ISO 9001 for quality, ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety, and ISO 14001 for environmental management exist so that a business can prove its processes are sound, rather than simply claim it. A provider prepared to have their work audited against those standards is telling you something about how they operate on your roof.
